I did actually, since my father is Iranian and I've grown up hearing stories of winters at Dizin and Shemshak, but for the most part it sounds like fantasy to most Americans. Josh Dean and I went for Outside magazine, and hey maybe we just got lucky, but fresh powder fell from a stormy sky each night, and we woke to a piercing blue sky each morning ... couple that with beautiful mountains, warm people and a wonderful guide, and zero lift lines, and it'd be nearly impossible for anyone not to have fun, politics or prejudices aside. But the mountains of water soaked possessions that stood in front of each home spoke to me in a way that the sheer destruction of homes didn't ... the human connection was right there; the family photos, the collectables, the heirlooms passed along through the generations. So that was it ... we walked house to house and heard countless stories of the fear, the loss, the absence of help or information ... and decided to make pictures of the things each person chose to save once they realized nearly everything would be destroyed by the time the storm was over. Some were embarrassed to admit what they grabbed on the way out the door, saying things like "I couldn't think straight I just knew I loved that Christmas wrapping paper so I wanted to keep it dry," while others went for sports memorabilia or a pet or the framed photo from the mantle ... in every case, just painfully sad that so little remained from the homes and lives of these storm victims. Antarctica http://alextehrani.com/Antarctica http://alextehrani.com/following/alextehrani.com/Antarctica Sun, 16 Dec 2012 00:27:06 +0000 Alex Tehrani 4455839 After a commission to photograph an ultra-marathon through the Saharan desert, I received an email from the race organizers asking if I'd be interested in joining them on their next event to "the last desert" ... we got on the phone and it quickly became clear they were asking if I'd like for one of my dreams to come true. I didn't hesitate. I caught a series of flights to Ushuaia, Argentina, and boarded an ice breaker with a few dozen serious athletes (and adrenaline junkies) and we set sail across a most unpleasant body of water, the Drake Passage. The crossing was pure misery, but 72 hours later towering mountains of ice rose from the sea and it all seemed ok again. The environment on this planet is in dire straits, but to the untrained eye in Antarctica, the natural world seemed to be alive and very well. Simply the most beautiful place I've ever seen.
